On this episode of Mark’s RV Garage:

Mark finishes the old Yellowstone restoration project and reflects back on how we got to this point.

Our vintage trailer restoration project almost came to a screeching stop when we realized that the axle on the trailer was only rated at 2,600 pounds rather than the 3,500 pounds we thought it was rated for. I put a call in to Dexter axle and they said to give them the measurements for the axle and they would get one built and sent out ASAP. They saved the day. The axle is here and as soon as we get it installed we can install our disc brakes from Kodiak Trailer Components and our electric hydraulic actuator from Tuson RV Brakes.

The Old Yellowstone trailer gets a new coat of paint and the paint job is revealed for the first time!

  • Mark installs a brand new 3,500 pound Dexter axle.
  • After the axle installation new brake rotors, disc brakes, wheels and tires are installed and the old Yellowstone gets an Actulink electric/hydraulic brake actuator along with new brake lines.
  • Before the trailer can hit the road Mark installs an Equalizer hitch and a DirecLink Network Enhanced brake controller

Enjoy the show!

Mark reflects back on how we reached this point

What was our goal with the show? Our goal was to promote RVing and to help RV enthusiasts learn more about using and maintaining their RV. In addition to the educational segments in the show we wanted a feature segment that our viewers would be interested in watching unfold. That segment turned out to be our vintage trailer restoration project. In hindsight I’m not sure if I would tackle a project this big again, but now that it’s over I wouldn’t change a thing. It gave me the opportunity to work on a project with Tyler which was great. He did a wonderful job seeing it through to the end.

Did I know how involved the restoration project would become? I knew I wanted to upgrade the old trailer with modern day technology, but I didn’t think it would require rebuilding the entire trailer.

What were my biggest concerns during the restoration? I’ve done quite a bit of carpentry and plumbing work in the past so I wasn’t too concerned about the framing, the water system and even the LP gas system. I would have to say my biggest concerns were the electrical system and installing new metal on the exterior of the trailer. What’s funny is I worried about some of these projects, but when it was time to do them it really wasn’t that difficult.

Did I consider keeping everything original in the restoration? I actually struggled with that. I understand that lots of folks realize the importance of keeping the trailer as original as possible in a restoration project. I also knew that there was going to be lots of product sponsors throughout the project. I thought it would be really neat to bring the past into the present so that’s the route we decided to go. We wanted to keep the vintage look with modern day amenities.

If I had to describe the trailer project using one word what would it be? That’s easy. It would be sleeper. In the world of muscle cars a sleeper is a car that looks ordinary and plain on the outside, but packs a lot of power under the hood. The old Yellowstone looks ordinary on the outside, but it is equipped with the latest technology on the inside. There aren’t many 16 foot travel trailers out there that have on demand hot water, an automatic TV antenna, power ventilator fans, an electric tongue jack, a solar battery charger, a stereo with CD/DVD, weather radio and IPOD ready, a 12 volt LCD TV and a back up camera.

Will there be a season 2??? Let’s just say we have some plans to talk to some of our friends in the industry about the possibility of another show. The focus would still be on RV education, but we would like to add some new segments featuring some of our RVing friends.

How about “RVing with Mark Polk & Friends“? I like that. Keep an eye out in the spring of 2012 there might be another great RV show in the works!

RV Buzz Quick Tip:

If you want to test your RV for LP gas leaks but don’t have a manometer you can use an approved LP gas leak detector solution. Just turn the gas on and spray the solution on all LP gas fittings and connections. If there is a leak you will see bubbles forming around the area where the leak is. Always remember to use a back up wrench whenever you tighten an LP gas fitting and double check it for leaks after tightening.

NOTE*You should take your RV to an authorized service center to have a complete LP gas check-up.

RV Product Spotlight:

JENSEN 24 Inch Silhouette LED Illuminated LCD TV

When it came time for entertainment ASA Electronics came through again with this Jensen LED illuminated LCD 24 inch TV. These new, high performance JENSEN LED TVs are perfect for the RV lifestyle. These TV’s ranging in size from 15 to 32 inches eliminate size, weight and power constraints which are all concerns among RVers.  They operate on 12-volt DC power making them ideal for dry camping too. The use of LED illuminated displays creates a slim, lightweight, space saving TV, great for mounting on the RV wall or on a stand like the one we will be using.  This Silhouette TV features high definition with an integrated HDTV tuner and 16.7 million colors in the display.

In addition to the great picture this Jensen TV also features all of the inputs and outputs you will need, and it’s compatible with the DVD player in the Jensen stereo we installed earlier. When it’s time to kick back and relax you can’t beat a JENSEN LED illuminated TV like this.

Electric tongue jack

I am all for working smarter, not harder, and when it comes to hitching and unhitching a travel trailer working smarter means installing an electric tongue jack. Stromberg Carlson Products came through with this JET 3500 pound electric tongue jack for the old Yellowstone trailer. This model has up to 18 inches of travel and there is a large 3 bulb LED light if you are hitching or unhitching when its dark outside. It also comes with an emergency crank handle to use if you don’t have power.

This 3500 pound electric tongue jack makes easy work of hitching and unhitching. Life just got easier for me with the old Yellowstone trailer. This product is available HERE

Scissor Jacks     Today we’re going to install a set of scissor jacks on the rear of the old Yellowstone, compliments of  Stromberg CarlsonProducts Inc. Scissor jacks help to stabilize the trailer when you set up at you camping destination. And in pop ups and small trailers like this if you don’t have scissor jacks and too much weight shifts to the rear of the trailer the front can flip up in the air. These jacks expand from 4 to 24 inches and the bowtie base works well on soft surfaces. You can weld or bolt the jacks to the frame of the trailer.

Well we killed two birds with one stone. Now we can stabilize the trailer when we’re camping and we don’t need to worry about the front going airborne if everybody decides to sit on the couch. For more information on these scissor jacks and other RV products take a minute to visit  Stromberg CarlsonProducts Inc.

Bunk ladder

When we go camping in the old Yellowstone trailer Tyler will be sleeping in the overhead bunk.

I didn’t want him stepping on my arm or leg on the bed below when he needs to get in or out of the bunk so we got this bunk ladder from Stromberg Carlson Products. It’s lightweight and durable and should help me get a peaceful nights rest if Tyler needs to get up in the middle of the night. For more information on the bunk ladder and more great products for RVs visit Stromberg CarlsonProducts Inc.

Refillable Steel Propane Cylinders

Power RV appliances, grills and other propane accessories.

Worthington’s steel portable propane cylinders come in eight sizes ranging from 4.25 lb. to 100 lb. for recreational, commercial, industrial and home applications. These cylinders are manufactured to Department of Transportation (DOT) or Transport Canada (TC) specifications in facilities that have a Quality Management System certified to ISO 9002 requirements. Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

 Cool RV Destination:

KOA – Jackson Hole / Snake River

Last summer when we took our 5 week RV vacation, we made a stop at the Jackson South/Snake River KOA, the gateway to an outdoor paradise that includes Jackson Hole, Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Bridger Teton National Forest, and the Snake and Hoback Rivers. The mountain Kampground sits right on the Snake River–they have RV and tent sites shaded by aspens, cottonwoods, and giant spruce trees; they have Kabins that overlook the Snake River and tent sites along both Horse Creek and the Snake River.  Enjoy guided whitewater rafting or scenic float trips that will surely be a vacation highlight (10% discount if you stay with KOA). Yet another popular activity they offer is tubing! Rent a tube for the whole day and float right down to the KOA. A great number of area activities include fishing the Snake River, hiking the Wind River Range, soaking in Granite Hot Springs, or taking a horseback ride right across the street. The shops, galleries, and restaurants of Jackson are just a 10-minute drive north

Voyager Digital Wireless Observation System Installation

Our friends at ASA Electronics sent us a Voyager Digital Wireless Observation System featuring WiSight™ technology for the old Yellowstone trailer. This digital wireless system far exceeds the performance of any analog wireless observation system on the market. WiSight technology digitally locks the Voyager® camera to its monitor so it only communicates with that monitor, ignoring other outside signals and eliminating interference. With WiSight technology you also get a sharp, vivid picture of the vehicle’s surroundings delivered directly to the 5.6” color LCD monitor. The easy mounting system and 12-volt DC power plug make this system easy to interchange among towing vehicles too. And it’s easy to install.

With this Voyager wireless observation system I can see what’s going on behind me and I don’t need to worry about blind spots when I’m towing the old Yellowstone. The WiSight technology is strong enough to travel through and around objects and it works on vehicles 60+ feet in length, which is a significantly longer distance than other wireless analog systems. For more information on the Voyager digital wireless observation system visit ASA Electronics.

ART4RVs

Through emails about buying an RV I became friends with an artist named Dick Secor. Dick and his wife Melissa have a dream to purchase an RV and travel fulltime through the US, Canada and Mexico. His RV dream isn’t just about traveling though. He also came up with the idea to start painting art 4 rvs.  He explained that there is not much wall space in an RV and he will be creating some smaller pieces of original art that will fit nicely on a small shelf or on a small section of wall. The art is intended to add a splash of color to the interior of an RV in the form of bold – bright – sassy color in an easy to manage display format. Here are two example of Dick’s art for RV’s that he graciously sent us, one for the motorhome and one for the old Yellowstone. For more information on Dicks work visit his blog: Art4RVs and RV Painter

Maintenance Mishaps-

There are many common problems associated with RVs that could easily be avoided by the owner performing some easy do it yourself checks and maintenance. Things like pre trip checks and checking the water levels in your batteries. I refer to these as RV maintenance mishaps.Avoiding these common mistakes is pretty simple.  Don’t become a statistic when it comes to RV maintenance mishaps.

RV Buzz Quick Tip: You should never add air to tires when they are hot. Hot air expands and you get false tire pressure readings. Adding or letting air out of a hot tire can lead to over or under-inflation. Always check and add air to tires when they are cold, before traveling more than one mile.

Trivia question :

What is Tyler’s favorite kind of RV?

A) Fleetwood Discovery Motorhome

B) Airstream Travel Trailer

C) Lance Truck Camper

Answer: B) Tyler’s favorite type of RV ia an Airstream Travel Trailer

Steer Safe

If you drive a motorhome you probably experience issues with the steering from time to time. Steering issues can result from a passing truck, high winds, soft shoulders and from road wander to name a few. Some of these issues can be white knuckle driving experiences.

I discovered a product that can prevent all of these steering issues when you’re on the road. It is called Steer Safe. Steer Safe is installed on your vehicle’s front steering arms and simply clamps onto the front axle. There is no welding required, you just bolt it on. Once it is installed the Steer Safe’s patented oscillating fulcrum bar makes it the only true steering stabilizer on the market.

It provides up to 400 lbs. of preset tension on each front wheel working against any outside forces. Steer safe keeps your front wheels pointing straight, even during a blowout.
Steer Safe protects you against front tire blowouts, potholes, soft shoulders, high winds, wandering, accidental encounters with curbs and high medians. It also reduces driver stress and fatigue. There is no maintenance required because Steer Safe is equipped with Delrin bearings which never require servicing.

Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

A Piece of RV History:
Ray Frank is the man credited with the term motorhome. In 1953 he built a house car for his family’s use and called it a motorhome.

From 1958 to 1962 Ray Frank was building Frank Motorhomes on Dodge chassis’ in Brown City Michigan. In the early 60s he started developing the fiberglass body motorhomes that would later be used in the Travco Dodge motorhome design. One hundred thirty one Travcos were built the first year with an average selling price of $9,000 dollars.

One of the motorhomes used by Charles Kuralt and his “on the road crew” for CBS news was a Travco.

Ray Frank was inducted in the RV hall of fame as the father of the motorhome.

RV Product Spotlight:

Sunforce 15 Watt Solar Battery charger

A common problem associated with RVs is dead batteries. There are numerous reasons for dead batteries including not fully charging the battery after using it, parasitic loads on the battery, lack of maintenance and overcharging to name a few. To help prevent some of these battery related problems on the old Yellowstone we’re going to install a Sunforce 15 Watt Solar Battery Charger.

It is possible for this solar panel to overcharge the battery so you can use the battery clamp connectors to hook it up when you want the solar panel to charge the battery. There is an optional Sunforce 7 Amp Solar Charge Controller available to prevent the battery from overcharging.

Now when I want to take advantage of the sun to help keep my battery topped off all I have to do is connect the battery clamps to the battery. When I don’t want to chance the battery overcharging I can disconnect it and store the ends in the battery box.

Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Don’t miss the next episode when Mark installs a brand new tankless water heater and gets ready to start testing some of the systems in the old Yellowstone trailer.

RV Buzz Quick Tip:

Performing routine maintenance on your generator assures years of reliable service. Maintenance schedules for generators are based on usage. Monitor the hour meter gauge and refer to the generator owner’s manual for recommended service intervals. I like to know that the generator is going o start and run properly when I need it.

Cool RV Destination:

For endless unspoiled sand, surf and summer fun head for the oceanfront Cape Hatteras KOA on the North Carolina Outer Banks. Your campsite is just a few steps over the dunes to the Atlantic. Walk the beach for miles, hunting for shells, casting for bluefish and scouring the surface for dolphins. Or head across this sliver of an island to Pamlico Sound, where windsurfers and kiteboarders head off toward the horizon. Enjoy a beautiful sunrise and later that evening a magnificent sunset.

There’s a full roster of summer activities at the campground – everything from pool games to basketball tournaments, craft activities like bead jewelry making, live skits and live music provided by the Summershiners. Finish with a dip in either of two pools and grab a bite at the poolside snack bar.

Don’t forget to try a scrumptious stack of pancakes at the pancake breakfast and later top your own sundae with your favorite topping. Enjoy a family-oriented film under the stars at our Outdoor Cinema. Fun at this KOA is as limitless as the sand.

There are lots of local attractions to keep you busy as well. Book a NC fishing charter trip, visit the Cape Hatteras National seashore and lighthouse, the graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the Lost Colony Outdoor drama and much much more.

So here is what you do. Send me your best RV camping or RV tech tip. For example to remember that your RV antenna is in the raised position hang your tow vehicle or motorhome keys from the antenna handle. That way you can’t drive off with youtr antenna up. Man I should give myself a copy for a great tip like that. So what are you waiting for send your tips today and start planning your RV trip with streets and trips tomorrow. E-mail me (Mark) your best tip and put my camping tip in the subject line.
The winner of this week’s Microsoft Streets and Trips is Vince.

Tip by Vince: Put a small dry erase board near the door of your RV for the exclusive propose of displaying the address of your current location. That way should you need to call 911, you can give the dispatcher your proper address rather than just saying Joe’s Campground and counting on them to look it up. In emergency situations every second counts. You will be under stress so make it easy and have this information at the ready. It could save your loved one’s life or somebody else’s.

Thanks Vince, keep checking your mailbox, your free copy of Microsoft Streets & trips with GPS is on its way. We still have two copies left so keep the camping tips coming and it could be you that gets the next free copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips.

Mark’s RV Product Spotlight:
When we go camping in the RV something that needs to be done quite often is to clean the floors and other areas of the RV with a vacuum cleaner, especially with kids and dogs running in and out. One problem with this is finding a space big enough to store a bulky vacuum cleaner and then getting it in and out every time you need to use it. I could understand the frustration so I decided to surprise Dawn by installing a Dirt Devil central vacuum cleaner designed for RVs. I installed the vacuum cleaner in an out of the way place, but have it accessible on the interior whenever we need it. ~ Mark Polk Available at Camping World

Now you don’t have to drive across the country in search of a driving school to learn driving skills.

Question: Mark, What is the difference between modified sine wave inverters and true sine wave converters? I store my RV 35 miles away at a RV storage lot without 120v household current. I’d like to inflate my tires with an air compressor right there on the lot. I’ve seen the inverters in the Camping World catalog and both claim to power variable speed tools.  Any help would be appreciated. I really enjoy your “Mark’s RV Garage” segments and your educational videos.

Mark’s answer: Good question and I’m glad you like the show.

There are a few things to consider when talking about inverters. Inverters are rated in watts and come in a variety of sizes and power ranges from 75 watts to 3000 watts. When you purchase an inverter the output capacity must be capable of operating the loads that will be placed on it. Inverters have two different capacity ratings, the continuous output rating and surge capacity rating. Continuous output is the maximum wattage the inverter can output for a long time period. Surge capacity is the maximum wattage the inverter can output during initial start up. All appliances require more power when they initially start, compared to what they use when they are running, so the starting power required for any appliance that you plan to use with the inverter must be within the surge capacity rating.

To answer your question the difference is primarily what type of AC power the inverter produces. There are modified sine wave inverters and true or pure sine wave inverters. Modified sine wave inverters are less expensive and will power most types of appliances. The down side to modified sine wave inverters is that some electronic equipment will not run on this waveform and because it’s not true or pure sine wave you may get some electrical noise or a snowy picture on your TV screen.

True or pure sine wave inverters are more expensive, but they are capable of producing power as good as a power company and all appliances and electronic equipment will run the way they are intended to. Microwaves, motors and other inductive loads will run quieter and will not overheat and electrical noise will be reduced. If you plan to use a computer or other sensitive electronic equipment you may want to consider a true sine wave inverter.

RV Buzz Quick Tip

Try to get in a habit of checking the condition of your windshield wiper blades before you leave on a trip. This is one of those things we don’t think about until the next time we need them. You can periodically clean the wiper blades using a rag with some windshield washer fluid on it.

Question: Hi Mark, quick question for you. In several of your DVD’s/articles, you recommend installing a temperature >controlled DC vent fan to improve RV refrigerator performance in hot weather. When I inquired about purchasing this accessory at my local Camping World, I was told that on a newer refrigerator (which I have), the performance is not significantly improved by a vent fan. Do you agree with this assessment, or do you believe that even the newest models will benefit from installing this accessory?

Mark’s Answer:  Well Russ that really depends on how well the refrigerator is vented when it is installed in the RV. I have seen refrigerators with little to no room for ventilation and others with more than enough room to help vent the heat from behind the refrigerator and keep it cool.

On our Class C Motorhome there was very little space for ventilation and I added a 12 volt fan to assist. It improved the cooling efficiency significantly. Our Class A MH came from the factory with a 12 volt fan already installed.

I guess the best answer is the refrigerator itself. If it seems to struggle keeping things cold in hot weather you can benefit from a fan. If it does a good job it probably isn’t necessary.

For more information on RV upgrades we offer a DVD titled EZ RV Upgrades.

The winner of this week’s Microsoft Streets and Trips is Phil Gordemer.

Congratulations Phil, your complimentary copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips is on the way to you.

Phil’s Tip: Hey Mark, got a tip for you that you might like, It saves a lot of “Hey Honey, where’s the …..” and acts as a roadmap on how to pack up and put things away.

Take the floor plan picture of your RV (in our case a Popup) from the manufacturers website or brochure and label  it with location letters. Then create a list of what is stored in that location. This is especially good for Popups/Hybrids where most of the storage is sight unseen under the seats.

Click here to see my sample.

If you are really organized (I used to be a flight instructor, so I am check list based type of guy), you can combine a setup checklist, floor plan map, notes page and breakdown checklist and make yourself a fold over booklet. I have attached the one I made as a sample. If you print it our double sided and fold it  over you have a booklet that fits on one of those small clipboards. We keep it by the door for easy access and to write notes on for the next trip.
This one was made for our 2008 Fleetwood/Coleman Seapine. We just picked up a 2011 Flagstaff HW27KS and as we go through the process of decided where things should go (tons of cabinets in it), the new roadmap will be critical. You can create these in lots of programs. I did this in Microsoft Publisher, but Word can work fine. It doesn’t have to be as fancy as this

Mark’s RV Product Spotlight:

Portable Surge Guard: Available in your choice of 30 Amp or 50 Amp- Surge protection is protection against voltage spikes on power lines. These voltage spikes can cause severe damage to electronic and electrical equipment. With today’s RV coming equipped with sophisticated and sensitive electronic equipment, a few short seconds of faulty power can damage appliances and electronics in the RV like stereos, satellite systems, microwaves, televisions, refrigerators and computers. The TRC Surge Guard family of power protection devices are designed to protect your RV’s electrical system and sophisticated electronics from the dangers of faulty electrical power.

Surge Guard offers total protection with three individual safety circuits. It checks the power pedestal for damaging mis-wire conditions and has a warning indicator for reverse polarity, dangerous current on ground wire and pedestal mis-wiring. It offers Solid state full mode surge protection and Automatic over and under voltage protection. Standard surge protectors do not provide protection for over and under voltage or open neutral conditions, The surge guard is weather-resistant, so you simply plug it in to the power pedestal and plug the RV power cord into the surge guard.

RV Trivia:

It’s said that the first RV was Pierce-Arrow’s Touring Landau introduced back in 1910. The camper model had a back seat that folded into a bed, a water tank, a chamber pot toilet and a wash basin that folded down from behind the seat of the chauffeur. It had a rear boot for trunks and extra storage boxes on the sides where you normally would see running boards. The chauffer stayed in touch with the campers using a telephone. The base price was slightly over $8,200 and with options it could exceed $8,500. For that price it better come with a chauffeur.

Mark’s RV Quick Tip:

One tip for controlling odors and extending the life of your RV holding tanks is to add plenty of water to the black water tank after you empty it. You want the bottom of the tank to be completely covered by water and depending on the size of the tank this might require 3 toilet bowls of water or it might take five or six. The other thing to keep in mind is to add plenty of water to the bowl every time you flush it so there is enough water in the tank at all times to help control any odors.

Question
My awning stays rolled up for weeks, and sometimes months at a time. I always try to put it away dry, but it still gets what looks like mildew on it. Those black mildew areas are difficult to remove. Do you think it is still damp when it is rolled up, and that’s what causes it to mildew? Also I saw an awning at a campsite that was not made out of the vinyl covered fabric. It was made out of some sort of mesh. It seemed to shade the sun quite well, but it was made of some sort of fabric you could almost see through. Do you know by chance what brand of awning that might have been? I couldn’t see a name on it.

Thanks Bill

Mark’s Answer:
It’s quite possible the awning fabric is dry when you store it but when it rains it is still possible for water to get inside a rolled up awning fabric if it doesn’t have a protective wrap. It’s a good idea to unroll the awning once a month when the RV is stored outside to let it air out and dry.

Fabric used on RV awnings is basically one of two types, acrylic or vinyl. The one you saw at the campground was an acrylic awning fabric. Acrylic awning fabric is a woven cloth that lets air circulate through the fabric. This air circulation allows the fabric to dry quickly when it gets wet. Acrylic fabrics are water repellent, but not waterproof. Vinyl awning fabric like yours mildews. Vinyl fabric is basically mildew resistant, but not necessarily mildew proof. What happens is mildew can form on the dirt and dust that collects on the vinyl fabric. It will be worse in high temperatures, humidity and if the fabric is stored when it is wet. Before storing an awning you should thoroughly clean the both sides of the fabric with an approved cleaner and allow it time to dry completely before stowing it.

For more information on RV awnings we offer an electronic download ebook and a DVD titled RV Awning Use, Care and accessories.
