A Piece of RV History:
Ray Frank is the man credited with the term motorhome. In 1953 he built a house car for his family’s use and called it a motorhome.

From 1958 to 1962 Ray Frank was building Frank Motorhomes on Dodge chassis’ in Brown City Michigan. In the early 60s he started developing the fiberglass body motorhomes that would later be used in the Travco Dodge motorhome design. One hundred thirty one Travcos were built the first year with an average selling price of $9,000 dollars.

One of the motorhomes used by Charles Kuralt and his “on the road crew” for CBS news was a Travco.

Ray Frank was inducted in the RV hall of fame as the father of the motorhome.

RV Product Spotlight:

Sunforce 15 Watt Solar Battery charger

A common problem associated with RVs is dead batteries. There are numerous reasons for dead batteries including not fully charging the battery after using it, parasitic loads on the battery, lack of maintenance and overcharging to name a few. To help prevent some of these battery related problems on the old Yellowstone we’re going to install a Sunforce 15 Watt Solar Battery Charger.

It is possible for this solar panel to overcharge the battery so you can use the battery clamp connectors to hook it up when you want the solar panel to charge the battery. There is an optional Sunforce 7 Amp Solar Charge Controller available to prevent the battery from overcharging.

Now when I want to take advantage of the sun to help keep my battery topped off all I have to do is connect the battery clamps to the battery. When I don’t want to chance the battery overcharging I can disconnect it and store the ends in the battery box.

Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Don’t miss the next episode when Mark installs a brand new tankless water heater and gets ready to start testing some of the systems in the old Yellowstone trailer.

Our friends at Microsoft streets and trips were gracious enough to send us 5 copies of the streets and trips with GPS locator. This is a 70 dollar value and we are giving these away for free, but there is a twist. Send me your best RV camping tip and if I use it on a show episode you get a copy of Microsoft streets and trips absolutely free. I’ll even pay for the shipping. You can’t beat that. So here is what you do. Send me your best RV camping or RV tech tip. For example to remember that your RV antenna is in the raised position hang your tow vehicle or motorhome keys from the antenna handle. That way you can’t drive off with youtr antenna up. Man I should give myself a copy for a great tip like that. So what are you waiting for send your tips today and start planning your RV trip with streets and trips tomorrow. E-mail me (Mark) your best tip and put my camping tip in the subject line.
The winner of this week’s Microsoft Streets and Trips is Phil Gordemer.

Congratulations Phil, your complimentary copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips is on the way to you.

Phil’s Tip: Hey Mark, got a tip for you that you might like, It saves a lot of “Hey Honey, where’s the …..” and acts as a roadmap on how to pack up and put things away.

Take the floor plan picture of your RV (in our case a Popup) from the manufacturers website or brochure and label  it with location letters. Then create a list of what is stored in that location. This is especially good for Popups/Hybrids where most of the storage is sight unseen under the seats.

Click here to see my sample.

If you are really organized (I used to be a flight instructor, so I am check list based type of guy), you can combine a setup checklist, floor plan map, notes page and breakdown checklist and make yourself a fold over booklet. I have attached the one I made as a sample. If you print it our double sided and fold it  over you have a booklet that fits on one of those small clipboards. We keep it by the door for easy access and to write notes on for the next trip.
This one was made for our 2008 Fleetwood/Coleman Seapine. We just picked up a 2011 Flagstaff HW27KS and as we go through the process of decided where things should go (tons of cabinets in it), the new roadmap will be critical. You can create these in lots of programs. I did this in Microsoft Publisher, but Word can work fine. It doesn’t have to be as fancy as this

Mark’s RV Product Spotlight:

Portable Surge Guard: Available in your choice of 30 Amp or 50 Amp– Surge protection is protection against voltage spikes on power lines. These voltage spikes can cause severe damage to electronic and electrical equipment. With today’s RV coming equipped with sophisticated and sensitive electronic equipment, a few short seconds of faulty power can damage appliances and electronics in the RV like stereos, satellite systems, microwaves, televisions, refrigerators and computers. The TRC Surge Guard family of power protection devices are designed to protect your RV’s electrical system and sophisticated electronics from the dangers of faulty electrical power.

Surge Guard offers total protection with three individual safety circuits. It checks the power pedestal for damaging mis-wire conditions and has a warning indicator for reverse polarity, dangerous current on ground wire and pedestal mis-wiring. It offers Solid state full mode surge protection and Automatic over and under voltage protection. Standard surge protectors do not provide protection for over and under voltage or open neutral conditions, The surge guard is weather-resistant, so you simply plug it in to the power pedestal and plug the RV power cord into the surge guard.

RV Trivia:

It’s said that the first RV was Pierce-Arrow’s Touring Landau introduced back in 1910. The camper model had a back seat that folded into a bed, a water tank, a chamber pot toilet and a wash basin that folded down from behind the seat of the chauffeur. It had a rear boot for trunks and extra storage boxes on the sides where you normally would see running boards. The chauffer stayed in touch with the campers using a telephone. The base price was slightly over $8,200 and with options it could exceed $8,500. For that price it better come with a chauffeur.

Mark’s RV Quick Tip:

One tip for controlling odors and extending the life of your RV holding tanks is to add plenty of water to the black water tank after you empty it. You want the bottom of the tank to be completely covered by water and depending on the size of the tank this might require 3 toilet bowls of water or it might take five or six. The other thing to keep in mind is to add plenty of water to the bowl every time you flush it so there is enough water in the tank at all times to help control any odors.

Question
My awning stays rolled up for weeks, and sometimes months at a time. I always try to put it away dry, but it still gets what looks like mildew on it. Those black mildew areas are difficult to remove. Do you think it is still damp when it is rolled up, and that’s what causes it to mildew? Also I saw an awning at a campsite that was not made out of the vinyl covered fabric. It was made out of some sort of mesh. It seemed to shade the sun quite well, but it was made of some sort of fabric you could almost see through. Do you know by chance what brand of awning that might have been? I couldn’t see a name on it.

Thanks Bill

Mark’s Answer:
It’s quite possible the awning fabric is dry when you store it but when it rains it is still possible for water to get inside a rolled up awning fabric if it doesn’t have a protective wrap. It’s a good idea to unroll the awning once a month when the RV is stored outside to let it air out and dry.

Fabric used on RV awnings is basically one of two types, acrylic or vinyl. The one you saw at the campground was an acrylic awning fabric. Acrylic awning fabric is a woven cloth that lets air circulate through the fabric. This air circulation allows the fabric to dry quickly when it gets wet. Acrylic fabrics are water repellent, but not waterproof. Vinyl awning fabric like yours mildews. Vinyl fabric is basically mildew resistant, but not necessarily mildew proof. What happens is mildew can form on the dirt and dust that collects on the vinyl fabric. It will be worse in high temperatures, humidity and if the fabric is stored when it is wet. Before storing an awning you should thoroughly clean the both sides of the fabric with an approved cleaner and allow it time to dry completely before stowing it.

For more information on RV awnings we offer an electronic download ebook and a DVD titled RV Awning Use, Care and accessories.

Kodiak’s product line now includes multiple options to select from, with disc brake sets ranging from 2000 lb. axle sets through 10000 lb. axle sets. Our customers represent all types of trailer manufacturers including marine, RV, horse, commercial/industrial, cargo, and even certain operations from the military.

The automotive industry converted to disc brakes for good reason. Specify Kodiak disc brakes on your next traileryou’ll be glad you did!

Charlie and I (Robert) are the third generation in the business(RV Product Accessories). We have scraped knuckles making proto types, and traveled the roads to meet with customers in their back yards. At our facility we talk about ISO-9000, CNC Machinery, Capability Studies, and developing reliable manufacturing systems. But on the road we talk to our customers about their goals and their vision, what lies ahead for them over the next five years. Until we understand what lies ahead for our customers we can not orchestrate our business. Serving your needs is the only way we can achieve success. Then the secret is to never stop chasing the needs of your customers. How can we help you today to be successful tomorrow? RV accessories such as electric tongue jacks, scissor jacks, hand rails and much more…

Mark’s RV Product Spotlight:

If you travel with kids, grandkids or pets you won’t want to leave home without the product were going to talk about today.  And the good news is it’s inexpensive and easy to install. The product I’m talking about is a Ruggids RV step rug.

The Ruggids RV step rug fits most manual and electric steps. It’s made of high quality olefin with a solid rubber backing. This RV step rug is designed to last in all weather conditions and the great news is the deep treads trap the dirt at the door, not inside the RV. Available at Camping World.

Mark:

What’s my favorite type of RV? Boy that’s a tough one. I like just about every type of RV for one reason or another, but I’ve gotten spoiled over the years so would probably say motorized RV’s.  I guess I like the convenience they have to offer while you are traveling.  But I wouldn’t count the old Yellowstone out, that will be fun to camp in too.

Question    Is it ok to leave my RV plugged in when we are not using it? This could be for several months at a time, and should I start the engine every week or so?

Mark’s Answer: Leaving the unit plugged in depends on what type of battery charger your RV converter has. If it is a three stage charger, with a maintenance or float stage, its okay to leave it plugged in. The three stage charger is designed to prevent the batteries from being overcharged, but I recommend you check the water levels periodically if you do leave the unit plugged in. Check your owner’s manual for information on the converter. If it’s not a three stage charger you can leave it unplugged and start it periodically or use a product like the Battery Minder to keep the batteries charged while in storage.

As for your second question I always add a fuel preservative to the fuel tank when our unit will sit idle for more than a couple months at a time. I run the engine and the generator long enough for the preservative to get through the fuel system. But, I still think it’s good to start and run the engine and generator at least monthly when in storage. It allows the oil to lubricate the dry components of the engine. When you run the generator be sure and run it with at least a half rated load on and if try to run it for at least an hour. You should be able to find the load ratings in the generator owners manual.

How did RVing get started in America? Well it can be attributed to when the American automobile industry embraced assembly line production.  By the end of 1913 the time to assemble a Model T chassis was cut from 12.5 hours to 2.7 hours. By 1916 the price dropped to 360 dollars making the Model T affordable to the average working middle class family.  Autocamping quickly spread across America. People could travel with cooking and camping equipment in their vehicle and avoid riding on trains and staying in overcrowded hotels. This was the great appeal of autocamping which lead to the craze that we know of as RVing today.
