RV Buzz Quick Tip: You should never add air to tires when they are hot. Hot air expands and you get false tire pressure readings. Adding or letting air out of a hot tire can lead to over or under-inflation. Always check and add air to tires when they are cold, before traveling more than one mile.

Trivia question :

What is Tyler’s favorite kind of RV?

A) Fleetwood Discovery Motorhome

B) Airstream Travel Trailer

C) Lance Truck Camper

Answer: B) Tyler’s favorite type of RV ia an Airstream Travel Trailer

Steer Safe

If you drive a motorhome you probably experience issues with the steering from time to time. Steering issues can result from a passing truck, high winds, soft shoulders and from road wander to name a few. Some of these issues can be white knuckle driving experiences.

I discovered a product that can prevent all of these steering issues when you’re on the road. It is called Steer Safe. Steer Safe is installed on your vehicle’s front steering arms and simply clamps onto the front axle. There is no welding required, you just bolt it on. Once it is installed the Steer Safe’s patented oscillating fulcrum bar makes it the only true steering stabilizer on the market.

It provides up to 400 lbs. of preset tension on each front wheel working against any outside forces. Steer safe keeps your front wheels pointing straight, even during a blowout.
Steer Safe protects you against front tire blowouts, potholes, soft shoulders, high winds, wandering, accidental encounters with curbs and high medians. It also reduces driver stress and fatigue. There is no maintenance required because Steer Safe is equipped with Delrin bearings which never require servicing.

Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

RV Product Spotlight:

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

I am a huge advocate for consumer education on tire care and maintenance. I think there is more educational material available now on RV tire care and maintenance than ever before. That’s great news, but with all the care and maintenance in the world it is impossible to know what kind of damage may have already occurred to the inside of a tire, that you are unaware of, and have no way of knowing when the tire might fail.

The good news is there is a way to monitor your tires while you are traveling. It’s called a Tire Pressure Monitoring System available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

RV Buzz Quick Tip: When you are working on an RV electrical system grounding is extremely important. Grounding all of the electrical equipment is necessary to provide a low resistance path to ground in the event of a fault current or short circuit. This way if a person is exposed to a fault current there is a lower path of resistance to ground for the current to follow. To do this we ground the distribution panel to the trailer chassis and for the 12 volt side we ground all the circuits to a grounding bar that will be grounded to the trailer chassis as well.

Marks RV Mailbox:

Q: Let me get right to the subject: Field Mice. They LOVE my motorhome. I have tried Bounce distributed liberally about the interior, cotton soaked with peppermint oil (interior and basement), electronic sonic noise makers, and “Shake Away” inside and out. I have also used traps with peanut butter and cheese (haven’t used them for a year), and rodent poison provided by my Terminix technician (currently in use).

I realize that the traps and poison are attractors while the rest are supposed to be repellers and wonder if they are working against each other. So far (knock on wood) no water lines or electric insulation have been on the mouse menu. I do leave several old soft rags in the basement storage which they seem to be happy with. But I am out of airspeed and ideas and would welcome any advice or counsel you could provide.

PS I really don’t want to get a cat.

Mark says: Well Pete that’s good question and one that I get asked a lot. Mice can cause lots of costly damage to an RV and I think anybody who stores their RV outside has tried most or all of the recommended solutions for keeping mice away from our RVs.

Before we had the garage I was a firm believer in the tried and true mouse trap, but like you mentioned the bait used in the trap actually attracts mice. A few fellow RVers have written to me with suggestions that I have not tried, but they swear by the products.

One is a product called the ratzapper, and I was told it does the job without poison or messy cleanup. You just go in the RV periodically and if the red light is flashing it indicates there is a dead mouse. You can dispose of the mouse without handling it.

The other product I was told about is called fresh cab rodent repeller and it’s an all natural rodent repeller with a guarantee. Keep in mind that I have not personally tried these products.

Trivia question about Mark: What is the largest vehicle Mark ever drove and operated?

A) 35 foot type A motorhome

B) 5 ton wrecker

C) M88A1 Armored Recovery Vehicle

ANSWER:  is C) M88A1 Armored Recovery Vehicle

Mark drove & operated a 56 ton M88A1 Recovery Vehicle while stationed in 3/36 Mechanized Infantry Battalion in Butzbach Germany

Microsoft Streets and Trips Winner: I received lots of great tips and wish I had more copies of Microsoft Streets and Trips to give away, but unfortunately we only have one left.  I tried to use tips that would be helpful to the viewing audience. The winner of the last copy of Microsoft Streets and trips is Dan & Pat with this great tip:

Mark;

Here’s and idea that has worked well for us. We didn’t want to add a standard metal file cabinet to the RV, but we needed to a way to store important papers and documents. Tossing them into a shoe box or drawer was not the answer. We found one of these storage cube ottomans for less than $40 and purchased a standard hanging file rack and files from the local stationary store. The hanging file rack can be adjusted to fit inside the cube and the files hung inside organize the documents. The top has two sides, one with a tray top and the other upholstered. We have an attractive piece of furniture that serves as file storage, a coffee table or a comfortable foot rest and the surface is easy clean vinyl. It is only 18′ square so it takes up little space. The benefit of this particular model is that it included a smaller ottoman nested inside the larger one. It works great to sit one of the grandchildren while they enjoy a snack on the tray top of the larger cube. We have a total of less than $50 wrapped up in the whole thing. We have recently seen the units advertised as low as $25.

****Thanks for the great tip and kep an eye out in the mail for your copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips. The storage ottoman that Dan and Pat are referring too can be purchased online at value city furniture.

Send me your best RV camping tip and if I use it on a show episode you get a copy of Microsoft streets and trips absolutely free. I’ll even pay for the shipping. You can’t beat that. So here is what you do. Send me your best RV camping or RV tech tip. For example to remember that your RV antenna is in the raised position hang your tow vehicle or motorhome keys from the antenna handle. That way you can’t drive off with youtr antenna up. Man I should give myself a copy for a great tip like that. So what are you waiting for send your tips today and start planning your RV trip with streets and trips tomorrow. E-mail me (Mark) your best tip and put my camping tip in the subject line.
The winner of this week’s Microsoft Streets and Trips is Vince.

Tip by Vince: Put a small dry erase board near the door of your RV for the exclusive propose of displaying the address of your current location. That way should you need to call 911, you can give the dispatcher your proper address rather than just saying Joe’s Campground and counting on them to look it up. In emergency situations every second counts. You will be under stress so make it easy and have this information at the ready. It could save your loved one’s life or somebody else’s.

Thanks Vince, keep checking your mailbox, your free copy of Microsoft Streets & trips with GPS is on its way. We still have two copies left so keep the camping tips coming and it could be you that gets the next free copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips.

Mark’s RV Product Spotlight:
When we go camping in the RV something that needs to be done quite often is to clean the floors and other areas of the RV with a vacuum cleaner, especially with kids and dogs running in and out. One problem with this is finding a space big enough to store a bulky vacuum cleaner and then getting it in and out every time you need to use it. I could understand the frustration so I decided to surprise Dawn by installing a Dirt Devil central vacuum cleaner designed for RVs. I installed the vacuum cleaner in an out of the way place, but have it accessible on the interior whenever we need it. ~ Mark Polk Available at Camping World

Now you don’t have to drive across the country in search of a driving school to learn driving skills.

Question: Mark, What is the difference between modified sine wave inverters and true sine wave converters? I store my RV 35 miles away at a RV storage lot without 120v household current. I’d like to inflate my tires with an air compressor right there on the lot. I’ve seen the inverters in the Camping World catalog and both claim to power variable speed tools.  Any help would be appreciated. I really enjoy your “Mark’s RV Garage” segments and your educational videos.

Mark’s answer: Good question and I’m glad you like the show.

There are a few things to consider when talking about inverters. Inverters are rated in watts and come in a variety of sizes and power ranges from 75 watts to 3000 watts. When you purchase an inverter the output capacity must be capable of operating the loads that will be placed on it. Inverters have two different capacity ratings, the continuous output rating and surge capacity rating. Continuous output is the maximum wattage the inverter can output for a long time period. Surge capacity is the maximum wattage the inverter can output during initial start up. All appliances require more power when they initially start, compared to what they use when they are running, so the starting power required for any appliance that you plan to use with the inverter must be within the surge capacity rating.

To answer your question the difference is primarily what type of AC power the inverter produces. There are modified sine wave inverters and true or pure sine wave inverters. Modified sine wave inverters are less expensive and will power most types of appliances. The down side to modified sine wave inverters is that some electronic equipment will not run on this waveform and because it’s not true or pure sine wave you may get some electrical noise or a snowy picture on your TV screen.

True or pure sine wave inverters are more expensive, but they are capable of producing power as good as a power company and all appliances and electronic equipment will run the way they are intended to. Microwaves, motors and other inductive loads will run quieter and will not overheat and electrical noise will be reduced. If you plan to use a computer or other sensitive electronic equipment you may want to consider a true sine wave inverter.

RV Buzz Quick Tip

Try to get in a habit of checking the condition of your windshield wiper blades before you leave on a trip. This is one of those things we don’t think about until the next time we need them. You can periodically clean the wiper blades using a rag with some windshield washer fluid on it.

Mark:

What’s my favorite type of RV? Boy that’s a tough one. I like just about every type of RV for one reason or another, but I’ve gotten spoiled over the years so would probably say motorized RV’s.  I guess I like the convenience they have to offer while you are traveling.  But I wouldn’t count the old Yellowstone out, that will be fun to camp in too.

Question    Is it ok to leave my RV plugged in when we are not using it? This could be for several months at a time, and should I start the engine every week or so?

Mark’s Answer: Leaving the unit plugged in depends on what type of battery charger your RV converter has. If it is a three stage charger, with a maintenance or float stage, its okay to leave it plugged in. The three stage charger is designed to prevent the batteries from being overcharged, but I recommend you check the water levels periodically if you do leave the unit plugged in. Check your owner’s manual for information on the converter. If it’s not a three stage charger you can leave it unplugged and start it periodically or use a product like the Battery Minder to keep the batteries charged while in storage.

As for your second question I always add a fuel preservative to the fuel tank when our unit will sit idle for more than a couple months at a time. I run the engine and the generator long enough for the preservative to get through the fuel system. But, I still think it’s good to start and run the engine and generator at least monthly when in storage. It allows the oil to lubricate the dry components of the engine. When you run the generator be sure and run it with at least a half rated load on and if try to run it for at least an hour. You should be able to find the load ratings in the generator owners manual.

How did RVing get started in America? Well it can be attributed to when the American automobile industry embraced assembly line production.  By the end of 1913 the time to assemble a Model T chassis was cut from 12.5 hours to 2.7 hours. By 1916 the price dropped to 360 dollars making the Model T affordable to the average working middle class family.  Autocamping quickly spread across America. People could travel with cooking and camping equipment in their vehicle and avoid riding on trains and staying in overcrowded hotels. This was the great appeal of autocamping which lead to the craze that we know of as RVing today.
